부모와 자녀가 한 직장에서 동료로 만났다. 자녀는 부모의 일하는 모습을 보며 꿈을 키웠고, 부모는 자신이 몸담은 회사의 매력과 안정성을 믿고 자녀에게 일터를 추천했다. 계기는 저마다 다르지만, 이들은 대를 잇는 사회 생활을 통해 얻는 회사를 향한 자부심과 만족감을 공유한다. 빔스, 아다스트리아, K-브랜드오프에 재직 중인 세 쌍의 ‘부모-자녀 사원’에게 입사 계기와 직장에서의 특별한 관계에 대해 들어봤다.

아들이 빔스에서 일하고 싶다고 말한 건 고등학생 때였다. 처음엔 흘려들었다. 결코 쉬운 일이 아니기에, 입사 시험을 볼 때도 “내 아들인 거 티 내지 마라”고 농담처럼 말했을 정도다. 물론 면접에서 바로 들통났지만.

나는 32세에 빔스로 이직해 남성 정장 외길을 걸어왔다. 정해진 매뉴얼도 있지만, 판매원으로서의 태도나 고객 응대법 등 대부분은 매장 선배들에게 직접 부딪히며 배웠다. 요즘 젊은 직원들 역시 회사에 대한 애정이 깊고 열정적으로 배우려는 자세를 갖추고 있어, 근무 환경이 많이 좋아졌기 때문이라고 생각한다.

아들에게 일과 관련한 조언을 해주기도 하지만, 꼰대처럼 보일까 봐 늘 조심한다. 판매 일은 현장이 아니면 온전히 설명하기 어려운 부분이 많다. 정년 전에 아들과 한 매장에서 일해보는 것이 소원이다.

어릴 적부터 아버지는 내게 ‘멋진 사람’의 표본이었다. 고단한 하루를 마치고 집에 돌아와서도 즐거운 표정으로 구두를 정성껏 닦던 모습이 선명하다. 대학 입학식 때 입을 정장을 아버지가 골라주셨는데, 그때 보여준 능숙하고 세심한 응대를 보고 같은 일을 해야겠다고 다짐했다.

취업 준비 당시 오직 빔스 한 곳만 지원했다. 고객 응대는 즐겁고, 남성 정장 파트는 포켓치프 하나를 추천하는 데도 깊은 지식이 필요해 배울 것도 많다. 가끔 매장에서 아버지의 오랜 단골손님을 만나 “10년 전 아버님이 추천해준 넥타이를 아직도 맨다”는 말을 들을 때면, 아버지의 존재가 새삼 대단하게 느껴진다.

요즘은 집에서 함께 구두를 닦거나, 거의 매일 저녁 술잔을 기울이며 일에 대한 이야기를 나눈다. 특히 정장 수선 기술에 대한 조언을 많이 얻고 있다. 언젠가 아버지와 한 매장에서 함께 고객을 맞이하고 싶다. 그리고 더 많은 사람에게 정장을 입는 즐거움을 알려주고 싶다.

2. 아다스트리아 (Adastria) | “아버지 뛰어넘는 인재 되겠다”

1997년 포인트(현 아다스트리아)에 입사해 점장, 브랜드장을 거쳤고, 현재는 교육 및 채용 등 인재 관련 업무를 총괄하고 있다. 아들이 우리 회사에 입사한다고 했을 때, 솔직히 정말 기뻤다. 아다스트리아의 가장 큰 매력은 ‘사람’이다. 인품 좋은 동료들이 많아 아들이 안심하고 일할 수 있는 곳이라 확신했다.

처음에는 주변 동료들이 우리 부자 관계를 부담스러워할까 봐 비밀로 할까도 생각했다. 하지만 2대에 걸쳐 한 회사에 다니는 모습이 오히려 회사에 긍정적인 영향을 줄 것이라 판단해 생각을 바꿨다. 아들의 신입사원 연수에 브랜드장 자격으로 참여했을 때가 기억에 남는다. 동료들에게 꽤 놀림을 받았지만, 그것마저 즐거운 추억이다.

어릴 때부터 나를 부족함 없이 키워준 아버지는 존경의 대상이었다. ‘아버지 같은 어른이 되고 싶다’는 생각은 자연스레 ‘아버지와 같은 회사에서 일하고 싶다’는 목표로 이어졌다.

패션 전문학교 졸업 후 다른 곳은 쳐다보지도 않고 포인트에 지원했다. 합격 통지를 받고, 사명이 아다스트리아로 바뀐 2015년에 입사했는데, 세상을 다 가진 듯 기뻤다.

회사에 들어와 보니 아버지의 존재가 더욱 크게 느껴졌다. 같은 조직에 속해 있기에 그가 맡은 역할이 얼마나 중요한지 실감한다. ‘몇 년 안에 아버지를 따라잡을 수 있을까?’ 하는 생각이 나를 움직이는 가장 큰 동기부여다. 아버지를 뛰어넘는 인재로 성장하는 것이 최종 목표다. 우선 점장으로서 경험을 쌓아 슈퍼바이저에 도전할 계획이다.

3. K-브랜드오프 (K-Brand Off) | “도전의 원천은 가족”

“나이·성별 관계없이 노력으로 평가받는 곳”

2010년 입사 후 IT 부서를 거쳐 2020년부터 상품 관리부에서 보석 상품화 업무를 담당했다. 작년 정년퇴직 후 현재는 파트타임으로 근무를 이어가고 있다. 정년퇴직을 앞두고 후임자를 찾을 때 딸에게 입사를 권했다.

나 역시 51세라는 늦은 나이에 파트타임으로 시작했지만, 정규직으로 전환됐고 관리직까지 맡았다. 개방적인 경영진의 마인드, 그리고 나이나 성별이 아닌 오직 노력으로 평가하는 사내 문화가 딸에게 회사를 추천한 가장 큰 이유다. 요즘은 딸의 업무를 보조하는 역할을 주로 맡고 있는데, 집에서도 자연스레 일 이야기를 나눈다. 딸이 이 회사에서 마음껏 성장하길 바란다.

2023년, 다른 업계에서 이곳으로 이직했다. 싱글맘이 되면서 어머니와 함께 살게 된 것이 계기였다. 생활에 변화가 생기자 더 열심히 일해야겠다는 책임감이 커졌고, 때마침 어머니로부터 ‘노력만으로 공정하게 평가받는’ 직장 이야기를 듣고 큰 매력을 느꼈다.

입사 후 보석 분류, 검품 등 상품화 실무를 맡고 있다. 모든 것이 처음이었지만, 어머니에게 필사적으로 배우며 업무를 익혔다. 지금은 상품 가격 책정, 매장 물량 배분 등 기존 역할을 넘어선 업무에도 적극적으로 도전하고 있다. 유통 효율을 개선해 회사 매출에 기여하는 것이 목표다.

어머니와 상사의 격려 덕분에 사내 행사 기획위원회에도 참여하게 됐다. 어머니와 타 부서 동료들과 교류하며 자신감을 얻는 소중한 경험을 쌓고 있다.
