현대리바트는 그 동안 주방 가구나 붙박이장 등 일부 가구 배송시 제품 모서리 보호나 빈 공간을 채우는 완충재로 스티로폼을 사용해 왔으나, 과도한 일회용품 사용에 따른 환경오염이 사회적 문제로 대두되자 이를 대체하기 위해 지난 7월부터 100% 재생 종이로 만든 친환경 완충재 ‘허니콤(Honeycomb)’을 제작, 사용하고 있다. 국내 가구업계에서 가구 포장재로 스티로폼을 사용하지 않는 곳은 현대리바트가 유일하다.
지난 7월부터 7개월간 현대리바트가 사용한 허니콤 완충재는 총 40만개로, 내년에는 연간 70만개의 허니콤을 사용할 수 있을 것으로 예상하고 있다. 회사 측은 이렇게 되면, 내년에 절감하게 되는 스티로폼 양이 50만 개(약 16톤)에 달할 것으로 추산하고 있다.
현대리바트 관계자는 “단순히 허니콤 사용에 그치지 않고 가구 배송에 사용한 ‘허니콤’을 수거해 이상이 없는 제품은 재사용하고, 파손된 완충재는 재활용하는 친환경 프로세스를 구축하는 등 ‘순환 경제 모델(Circular Economy)’을 갖추게 됐다”고 말했다.
