서울시에 따르면 5가구 중 1가구가 반려동물 가구에 해당하는 것으로 나타나는 등 반려동물을 키우는 인구는 매년 급증하는 추세다. 반려동물에게 아낌없이 투자하고 함께 생활하는 ‘펫팸족’의 증가에 따라 최근에는 온라인상에서도 반려동물을 다룬 콘텐츠가 인기 소재로 자리 잡았다. 한편으로는 몇몇 유튜버들의 동물 학대 및 거짓 방송이 잇따라 논란을 일으키며 반려인들의 책임감에 대한 사회적 목소리도 높아지고 있다.
이에 스마트학생복(대표 윤경석)은 반려동물 콘텐츠에 대한 학생들의 생각을 알아보고자 7월 2일부터 약 2주 동안 1556명의 10대 청소년을 대상으로 반려동물 콘텐츠를 시청하는 이유, 반려동물 콘텐츠에 대한 생각, 동물 학대 등 부정적 이슈를 접했을 때 어떻게 행동하는지, 반려동물 입양 계획 등에 대한 설문조사를 실시했다.
‘현재 반려동물을 키우고 있는지’에 대한 질문에는 45.8%의 학생들이 키운다고 응답했다. 강아지가 31.4%로 가장 많았으며 이어 고양이, 소동물(햄스터, 기니피그, 패럿 등), 조류, 파충류 순으로 나타났다. ‘유튜브, 인스타그램 등을 통해 반려동물과 관련된 콘텐츠를 시청하는지’에 대한 질문에는 90.7%의 학생들이 시청한다고 답했다.
‘반려동물 콘텐츠를 시청하는 이유’에 대한 질문에는 반려동물에 대한 다양한 정보를 얻기 위해서(39.1%, 609명), 예쁘고 귀여운 것을 보는 것이 좋아서(32.8%, 510명), 대리만족을 느끼기 위해(21.3%, 331명), 기타(6.4%, 99명), 반려동물 채널 운영에 참고하기 위해(0.4%, 7명) 순으로 응답했다.
‘반려동물 콘텐츠에 대해 어떻게 생각하는지’에 대한 질문에는 반려동물과 함께 일상을 기록하는 콘텐츠로 좋게 생각(48.9%, 761명), 대리만족, 다양한 정보 습득 등 많은 장점이 있어 매우 긍정적으로 생각(31.6%, 492명), 수익창출을 위해 반려동물을 이용하는 사람이 있을 것 같아 우려(16.5%, 257명), 동물 학대로 보이는 콘텐츠도 있어 매우 부정적(3%, 46명)이라고 대답했다.
‘반려동물에 대한 부정적인 이슈를 접했을 때 어떻게 행동하는지’에 대한 질문에는 게시물을 공유해 많은 사람들에게 알리려고 노력한다(39.3%, 611명), 청원을 진행하는 등 문제 해결을 위해 적극적으로 행동한다(28%, 435명), 기사 및 게시물에 댓글을 달아 의견을 피력한다(19.1%, 297명), 그냥 지나친다(9.8%, 153명), 기타(3.9%, 60명)의 순으로 나타났다.
‘동물 학대, 유기 등 부정적 이슈가 지속적으로 발생하는 이유는 무엇이라고 생각하는지’에 대한 질문에는 동물 학대, 동물 유기에 대한 약한 처벌(34.4%, 536명), 책임감의 부재(28.1%, 437명), 반려동물을 소모품이라고 생각하는 인식 문제(20.9%, 325명), 반려동물을 쉽게 입양할 수 있는 구조적인 문제(12.9%, 200명), 기타(3.7%, 58명)로 나타났다.
마지막으로 ‘반려동물을 입양할 계획이 있는지’에 대한 질문에는 현재 키우고 있지 않지만 독립을 한다면 입양할 예정이다(30.5%, 474명), 현재 키우는 반려동물만 키울 예정이다(24.4%, 379명), 현재 키우고 있지만 여유가 되면 더 입양하고 싶다(19%, 295명), 현재 키우고 있지 않고 입양할 계획도 없다(14.8%, 231명), 현재 키우고 있지 않지만 입양할 계획이 있다(11.4%, 177명)라고 응답했다.
스마트학생복 관계자는 “최근 반려동물을 주제로 다양한 영상 콘텐츠가 쏟아지는 만큼 관련해서 학생들의 생각을 알아보고자 이번 설문조사를 진행하게 됐다.”며, “앞으로도 학업 및 사회적 문제에 대한 청소년들의 고민에 관심을 기울이며 소통을 이어나갈 것”이라고 전했다.
