브라운브레스는 올해 매출 목표 300억원을 향해 달린다. 지난해 전년대비(2022년) 160%에 육박하는 성장세에 이어 올해도 분위기가 좋다. 이러한 매출에는 브라운브레스 베스트아이템인 태그티(TAG TEE), 스플래시 태그티(SPLASH TAG TEE), 패이즐리 태그티(PAISLEY TAG TEE)가 힘을 보탰다. 태그 후드티는 지난 2019년 윈터 시즌에 첫 출시됐고 누적 판매량만 16만장을 넘어섰다. 뿐만 아니라 스타일 수도 유통별로 전략적으로 배분하는 등 탄력적인 상품 운영 또한 매출 기여에 한몫 했다.

◇ 브라운브레스 처음 본 순간…로고의 강렬함 잊을 수 없어
이렇게 브라운브레스가 성장할 수 있었던 데에는 박인동 대표가 있다. 브라운브레스는 ‘Spread The Message’라는 슬로건 아래 2006년 론칭한 스트리트 캐주얼 브랜드다. 아무 의미 없는 제품들에 싫증을 느껴 시작하게 된 브라운 브레스는 ‘메시지를 전파하자’ 라는 모토로 제품을 통해 브랜드 이야기를 담아내고 있다.
“브라운브레스의 시작은 4명의 젊은 친구들로부터 출발했습니다. 제가 2019년 지인의 소개로 이 브랜드를 만난 순간 무릎을 탁 쳤죠. 다른 그 어느 것보다 브라운브레스 ‘로고’가 한눈에 들어왔어요. 임팩트있으면서 강렬했습니다. 이 브랜드는 된다 싶었죠”라며 브라운브레스와의 첫 만남을 떠올렸다.
국내 진 생산 전문업체인 두진양행(대표 이욱희)이 브라운브레스의 상표권을 매입했고 자회사인 당당에서 브라운브레스를 새롭게 전개하게 됐다. 1세대 스트리트 브랜드 ‘브라운브레스’가 박인동 대표와 만나면서 그야말로 상승세를 타게 된 것이다.
브라운브레스의 성공, 그리고 미다스로 불리는 박 대표의 패션스토리가 궁금해졌다. 박 대표는 사범대학에서 국어교육과를 졸업하고 모 고등학교 국어교사를 지냈던 반전 이력을 갖고 있다. 그 당시 꽤 잘나가는 교육 사업가로도 알려졌던 박 대표는 어느 날 지인을 통해 모피 사업(무스탕, 토스카나)에 발을 딛이게 됐다. 하지만 한창 사업이 잘됐던 시기에 IMF가 터졌다.
이탈리아 등 유럽에서 들여온 수입 원단의 환율 리스크로 모피 사업을 중단하게 됐다. 10여년 간 해왔던 모피비즈니스에 아쉬움이 컸지만 이를 뒤로하고, 2000년 여성 커리어 브랜드 ‘이뎀’ 본부장으로 합류했다. 이듬해인 2007년에는 파파야로 옮겨 활약했다. 이후에는 2010년 팬콧, 2011년 플랙 총괄 본부장으로 이름을 알렸다.
◇ 패션은 옷에서 끝나는 것이 아닌 ‘컬처’ 만들어 내야
박 대표는 “지금 생각해보면 정말 열심히 앞만 보고 뛰었던 것 같아요. 모피에 캐주얼 그리고 여성복 파파야까지. 여성 커리어부터 SPA, 캐주얼, 데님까지 섭렵했던 시기죠”라고 말했다. 그동안 여러 카테고리를 거치면서 노하우를 쌓아온 그는 “패션은 옷에서 끝나는 것이 아닌 컬처를 만들어 내야합니다. 젊은 친구들이 말하는 ‘힙하다’는 것이 단지 착장을 넘어서 그들만의 문화를 관통해야한다고 생각해요, 그것이 그 브랜드 스토리의 핵심이 될 것이기 때문입니다”
이어 “‘Spread The Message’가 브라운브레스의 기본 슬로건이잖아요. 브라운브레스는 매 시즌 새로운 주제로 콘셉트를 잡고 다양한 그래픽을 통해 메시지를 담아 의류와 가방 컬렉션을 선보이고 있습니다. 편안하게 착용할 수 있는 그러면서도 스타일리시한 룩으로 만들고자 합니다”라고 설명했다.
