“국내 수많은 모자 브랜드가 있지만 ‘퀄리티’와 ‘가격’ 둘다 잡은 헤드웨어(모자) 브랜드가 있을까요? 저는 국내 이러한 시장상황을 캐치해 헤드웨어가 틈새 시장임을 보게됐죠” 헤드웨어 브랜드 ‘화이트샌즈’를 전개하고 있는 황태연 NH그룹 대표의 얘기다.

NH그룹이 전개하고 있는 ‘화이트샌즈’는 세련됨과 고급 이미지를 갖춘 모자 브랜드로 20대부터 40대까지 폭 넓은 연령대의 고객층을 중심으로 여성과 남성 할 것 없이 두터운 팬덤을 확보하고 있다.

‘화이트샌즈’는 다양한 스타일의 디자인과 편안한 착용감, 자외선 차단 기능을 갖춘 제품으로 호평을 받고 있는 가운데 매 시즌 패션피플들이 좋아할만한 지속적인 디자인 개발에 힘을 쏟고 있다.

황태연 대표는 “모자가 패션 스타일링에서 액세서리 개념으로 인식되고 있지만 실제로는 일상 생활에서 필수 아이템으로 자리잡고 있습니다. 예를 들어 멋내기 아이템이기도 하지만 자외선 차단, 보온의 역할도 하고 있기 때문이죠. 앞으로 기후 변화에 따른 모자에 대한 인식과 수요는 더욱 커질 것으로 전망하고 있습니다”라며 헤드웨어에 대한 중요성을 강조했다.

대학에서 기계공학을 공부했던 공대생이었던 그는 패션에 관심이 많았다. 황 대표는 “대학시절 일본 패션에 관심이 컸습니다. 일본 패션에 관련된 잡지와 서적들을 찾아서 구입해 볼 정도였으니까요(웃음)”라고 말했다.

목과 머리를 감싸주는 감각적인 바라클라바

◇ 최고의 모자 브랜드 만들기로 결심… ‘화이트샌즈’ 탄생 스토리

그가 처음으로 시작한 것은 온라인 쇼핑몰이다. 그는 ‘해외 브랜드 제품을 직접 들여와서 판매해봐야겠다’고 2000년 초 당시 유행했던 미국 브랜드 ‘아베크롬비’와 ‘홀리스터’를 판매하기 시작했다.

그러던 중 스냅백(snapback:뒤쪽에서 스냅으로 사이즈를 조절하는 모자)으로 유명한 모자 브랜드인 ‘플랫피티(FLAT FITTY)’의 한국 디스트리뷰터로 국내 유통을 전개하게 된다.

‘플랫피티(FLAT FITTY)’는 2005년 캘리포니아에서 시작된 힙합 콘셉트의 브랜드로 황태연 대표가 국내 들여와 국내에서 2012년 론칭했다. 이후 연이어 2007년 캘리포니아에서 유명 프로스케이터들과 협업으로 만들어졌던 브랜드 ‘오피셜(OFFICIAL)’을 한국에는 2013년 선보였다.

가볍고 시원한 여름 필수 버킷햇

황태연 대표는 “‘플랫피티(FLAT FITTY)’ 경우는 국내에 유명 스냅백 브랜드가 많지 않았던 시기에 출시했기 때문에 국내 수요와 딱 맞아 떨어졌어요. ‘플랫피티(FLAT FITTY)’는 그 당시 폭발적인 인기를 끌며 헤드웨어 시장에 새로운 바람을 일으키는 촉진제가 됐다고 생각합니다”라고 말했다.

이후 황태연 대표는 자체 모자 브랜드를 만들기로 결심해 ‘화이트샌즈’가 탄생된 것이다.

‘화이트샌즈(WHITE SANDS)’는 2014년 11월에 론칭한 국내 브랜드로 매 시즌 200 SKU를 만들어 마켓에 공급하며 안정적으로 자리매김하고 있다.

감각적인 라피아 플로피햇

◇ 스타일에 ‘기능성 라인’ 추가 확장… 우양산 등 잡화biz 시동

올해 들어 NH그룹이 가장 신경을 써서 집중하고 있는 것은 기후 변화에 따른 ‘기능성 아이템’들이다.

‘화이트샌즈’가 지난 2025 SS 컬렉션에서는 브랜드의 스테디셀러 제품인 ‘소니아’, ‘보르도 보닛햇’, ‘와이드 카멜라’, ‘뉴 라자르 라피아 썬캡’, 그리고 실용성과 스타일을 모두 갖춘 ‘로데스’와 ‘로케라’ 제품을 선보이며 고객들의 호응을 얻었다.

이 중에서도 ‘로데스’에는 ‘화이트샌즈’만의 고급 기능성 원단인 ‘쿨맥스(Coolmax)’ 소재로 제작된 땀받이 밴드가 추가됐고, 쿨맥스 원단은 땀과 수분 관리 기능과 체온 조절 기능을 갖춰 장시간 착용시 쾌적함을 유지할 수 있도록 제작했다. 또, 해당 땀받이 밴드는 특허 출원된 제품으로 위생적이면서도 편안한 착용감을 제공해 여름철 필수 아이템으로도 인기를 모았다.

특허 받은 라피아 썬캡

최근에는 프리미엄 우양산과 액세서리 라인업까지 확장했다. ‘화이트샌즈’의 신제품 우양산은 UPF 50+ 자외선 차단력과 99.9% 차단율을 FIFT 시험연구원을 통해 공식 인증받은 고기능성 제품들이다.
또한 초경량 118g의 설계, 강력 발수 원단, 자체 개발한 카라비너, 스트랩까지 더해 실용성과 디자인을 모두 갖춰 고객들로부터 큰 호응을 얻었다.

‘화이트샌즈’ 유통망은 온라인뿐만 아니라 롯데, 신세계 주요 백화점 팝업을 통해 전개 중에 있다.
작년(2024년)에 오픈한 롯데백화점 잠실점에서는 베스트셀러 아이템인 페도라를 비롯해 보닛햇, 버킷햇, 플로피햇, 이어머프, 트루퍼햇, 비니 등 다양한 헤드웨어 라인들을 구성했으며, 이 외에도 NH그룹이 현재 잡화 라인으로 비즈니스를 확장하고 있는 아이템인 헤드웨어 액세서리, 마스크, 가방 등으로 컬렉션들도 볼 수 있다.

내년 1월 말까지 예정돼 있는 신세계 백화점 천안 아산점 팝업에서도 ‘화이트샌즈’의 보다 풍성해진 컬렉션들로 구성해 고객들과 소통을 이어갈 예정이다.

◇ 미라이스(MIRAISE)와 일본 내 독점 판매 계약 체결 확정!

이밖에도 이번 FW 시즌 NH그룹의 가장 큰 이슈는 미라이스(MIRAISE)와 일본 내 독점 판매 계약을 체결한 것이다. 미라이스(MIRAISE)는 일본 상장사 포시즈HD(4Cs HD, 도쿄증권거래소 상장)와 (주)TIM HOLDINGS의 김토일(金土日) 대표이사가 함께 설립하는 합작 법인으로 포시즈HD의 연결 자회사로 편입될 예정이다.

미라이스는 다가오는 FW 시즌부터 온라인과 오프라인에서 브랜드 전개에 나선다. 포시즈HD는 라이프스타일 전문 기업으로, 화장품·건강식품·아로마 등 다양한 사업 포트폴리오를 운영하고 있으며 연 매출 2천억 원 이상을 기록하는 상장사다. 특히 지속가능경영, 철저한 거버넌스, 다각적인 사업 확장 전략을 바탕으로 장기적 성장을 이어가고 있어, 일본 내에서 높은 신뢰를 얻고 있다. 이번 협업을 통해 ‘화이트샌즈’와 ‘블랙샌즈’의 일본 시장 전개를 전방위적으로 지원할 예정이다.
